Vigil for Islan Nettles, a transgender woman attacked and killed in Harlem last week, to be held tomorrow, Tuesday, August 27th at 6pm
Last week, the New York City Anti-Violence Project (AVP) learned of the death of Islan Nettles, a transgender woman, who died as a result of an attack which occurred in the early morning hours on Saturday, August 17, in Harlem. According to media reports and the NYPD, Ms. Nettles and her friends were on West 148th Street and 8th Avenue on Saturday night when one or more people attacked her, using anti-gay and anti-transgender slurs. Ms. Nettles was taken to Harlem Hospital for her injuries and, on Thursday August 22nd, was taken off of life support and died. So far, one person has been arrested in relation to this incident.
NCAVP’s most recent report, Hate Violence Against Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and HIV-Affected Communities in the United States in 2012, documented 25 anti-LGBTQ murders. 73.1% of all anti-LGBTQ homicide victims in 2012 were people of color and 53.8% were transgender women. In this report, NCAVP provides specific recommendations for policymakers, funders, and community members to reduce and prevent violence against transgender people of color.
