What is the Audre Lorde Project?
The Audre Lorde Project is a Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Two Spirit, Trans and Gender Non Conforming People of Color center for community organizing, focusing on the New York City area. Through mobilization, education and capacity-building, we work for community wellness and progressive social and economic justice. Committed to struggling across differences, we seek to responsibly reflect, represent and serve our various communities.
What is the Audre Lorde Project Community Security Training series?
The Audre Lorde Project Security Boot Camp aims to strengthen our community and ourselves by developing a greater knowledge of ways to create safe environments. The Security Boot Camp will focus on building leadership by training LGBTSTGNC POC in security protocols. Through workshops, discussions and practice participants will learn:
- A community based strategy to reduce violence
- Protocols and formations for community security
- Concrete skills in conflict de-escalation
- What goes into planning, executing and evaluating security
Who are we looking for?
-LGBTSTGNC People of color and allies who are interested in learning how to make Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Two-spirit, Trans and Gender Non Conforming people of color spaces safer without relying on police, law enforcement, or the state
- Folks who are interested in building safety skills with the Audre Lorde Project long term [i.e. at least 6 months]
-Folks who can show up to all sessions on time and bring their full selves, remain present, and come with questions
-Folks who can commit to doing security at 2 ALP events one on March 15th, 2012 and the other in early April 2012.
-We strongly encourage community members who have done security at past ALP events, LGBTSTGNC People of color, and ALP members to apply.
