ABOUT THE MOTH COMMUNITY PROGRAM:
The Moth Community Program provides the space, tools, and expertise for people to practice the art and craft of personal storytelling. Through workshops and performance opportunities, participants shape selected life experiences into well-crafted stories and share them with members of their communities and beyond.
We offer introductory and intensive workshop models. Both models’ curriculum is focused on storyteller agency and introduce a variety of techniques for listening, crafting, and brainstorming. It is a highly verbal curriculum (as opposed to written).
INTRODUCTORY WORKSHOPS:
Over the course of a 3-hour workshop, participants will hear and discuss a story told by a veteran storyteller, explore their own life experiences to identify story ideas, provide feedback to fellow tellers, and perhaps give their own story a try. This workshop model accommodates 12-15 participants. On a general note, our curriculum is extremely focused on storyteller agency and introduces a variety of techniques for listening, crafting, and brainstorming But it is a very verbal curriculum.
Some of the things participants will experience include:
- Introduction to The Moth, storytelling principles, and each other
- A sample story
- Brainstorming techniques
- Trying out their own ‘mini-story’ with another participant
INTENSIVE WORKSHOPS:
Intensive Workshops offer a deep dive into the art and craft of storytelling. The intensive concludes with participants sharing five-minute stories for a small, invite-only audience. This model takes a total of 15-hours, broken up over a series of sessions, and accommodates 9-12 participants. Over the course of the workshop, participants explore Moth principles of personal narrative, reflect on life experiences through a series of prompts, identify one personal story they wish to tell, and craft a five-minute version of that story with the help of Moth instructors and in small groups. Each workshop opens with trust-building games to develop a supportive space. Participants do not need to have their stories identified before the workshop begins. Brainstorming plays a big role in our work, and many participants find their stories after the workshop has started.
- The Moth does not enforce a theme on workshop participants. Members of the workshop are free to share any story they'd like too.
- Workshops can be delivered in one of several formats, depending on whether the workshop is conducted live or virtually, as well as on what best fits the participants’ schedules.
- The 12-hours of instruction can be broken into six 2-hour sessions, four 3-hour sessions, three 4-hour sessions, or two 6-hour sessions.
- All 12-hour workshops are followed by a 2-3 hour share where participants will have an opportunity to tell their stories in front of a small, invited audience.
- Workshop sessions must be scheduled no more than one week apart.
- Final Shares are scheduled directly or soon after the final workshop.
