Are you an LGBTSTGNC Immigrant who's fluent in English and another language?  Are you an LGBTSTGNC person of color who's fluent in English and another language and wants to support immigrant rights work?   Interested in gaining interpretation skills AND learning about interpreting for social justice?   

"I am extremely thankful for the opportunity to have participated in The Interpreting for Social Justice training offered by the Audre Lorde Project. It was a relevant, useful and exciting training.  I was able to connect with others from similar backgrounds and share real life situations and personal stories. All of these stories helped reinforce my desire to be active as an advocate in my own community and in my professional life. Together we were able to learn about: providing language accessibility to promote social justice, create multilingual spaces to support immigrant communities, and build alliances across communities.  I highly recommend this training to other bi-lingual or multi-lingual LGBTSTGNC Immigrants of color who would like to utilize their privilege of being bi/multi lingual to promote social justice in their communities.

I have since been able to use my newly developed skills to provide socially just and ethical interpreting to immigrant people of color at my job and also through my membership with ALP. This has solidified my bond with other LGBTSTGNC Immigrant People of Color.  I look forward to continuing to develop and use my skills for the advancement of historically and presently oppressed people."

What is the Interpreter Training?  One of our natural resources is that many of us are multilingual and have been interpreting for friends, family, neighbors and coworkers.  The Interpreter Training seeks to provide opportunities for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Two Spirit, Trans and Gender Non-Conforming immigrants of color who are already informal community interpreters to:  

•  gain greater skills in interpretation
•  learning about language justice strategies
•  better understand how to build more multilingual spaces
• share knowledge about health, social and community resources
• share resources on translating health, sexuality and gender issues.

What are the details? 

The program includes two all day trainings on Saturday, October 10^th and Sunday, October 11^th, which will focus on sharpening interpretation skills.  You must be available for both days to participate.  There are a limited number of stipends available for this training.  After completion of the training, participants will be expected to volunteer 5-10 hours providing interpretation for ALP events and actions after shadowing more experienced interpreters, attending practice sessions, and participating in skills development exercises, and evaluation. 

Can I be one of the interpreters in this program?  Yes!

If you:

• Identify as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Two Spirit, Trans, Gender Non-Conforming, Queer, or not Heterosexual/Straight.
• Identify as a person of color – including African, Asian, Middle Eastern, Latin American, Caribbean, Indigenous / First Nations, and/or Pacific Islander.
• Are fluent in more than one language including English.
• Priority will be given to NYC-based applicants.

What are the next steps?

• After filling out the application and sending it in, we will call you for a follow-up conversation.
• If you wish to participate in the program, but do not need a stipend please note this on your application.  While stipends are limited there will be space for some non-stipend participants.
