Asilegal (short for Asistencia Legal) and while based in México City, does work across the entire country. The agency is in the mode of legal defense organizations here in the US in that it works on changing policy and legislation, but also does targeted litigation. Specifically, it sues the federal Mexican government over human rights abuses and politically motivated imprisonment. It limits its work to the following populations: LGBQTSTGNC, women, indigenous, and seniors (elders).
The founders, Luis and Luis, make a yearly trip to the USA to meet with folks working on international coalitions on migration, global due process, and the global prison industrial complex.

Who is/Quienes son ASILEGAL?
Asistencia Legal por los Derechos Humanos (Asilegal) works with some of the most marginalized communities in México – native peoples, LGBTQ folks, women, children and youth – that are either in prison or otherwise caught up México’s legal/penal system. As in the U.S. many of these of imprisonments are politically motivated to silence dissidence. The core of Asilegal’s work involves suing the Mexican federal government on behalf of imprisoned folks – important work that is politically and personally risky. Asilegal also engages in systemic change efforts through public policy work and leadership development through community education programs.
Vision
To be an organization that is accountable to its environment and that works toward the eradication of the oppressions face by the most vulnerable sectors in society such as Native peoples, elders, children, LGBTQ youth, and persons with disabilities.
Mission
Legal Defense of Human Rights: The universally recognized human rights of all people must be known and understood in order to exercise and if necessary, defend them. Based on this understanding, Asilegal offer legal advocacy and public education around the issue of human rights.
Work Areas
In an effort to be accountable to our civic commitments, we undertake work that links our diverse areas of expertise and skill sets. We are an assembly of professionals who came from various civil society organizations (similar to US non-profits in purpose, if not structure) whose combined work history in advocacy, public awareness, outreach, lobbying, research, and legal defense informs our approach to social issues.
Asistencia Legal por los Derechos Humanos (Asilegal) is comprised of a young, multidisciplinary team that includes ethnologists, attorneys, and international relations experts whose collective expertise is integrated in all of our work.

Asistencia Legal por los Derechos Humanos (Asilegal) trabaja con algunas de las comunidades más marginalizadas en México—pueblos indígenas, gente LGBT, mujeres, niños y jovenes—quienes están en la cárcel o atrapados de otras maneras en el sistema legal/penal. Tanto como en los Estados Unidos, muchos de estos encarcelamientos son por motivos políticos para silenciar la disidencia. El corazón del trabajo de Asilegal se trata de demandar al gobierno federal Mexicano por parte de los/las encarcelados/as—trabajo importante que es lleno de riesgos politicos y personales. Asilegal también hace esfuerzos del cambio sistémico por medio del trabajo en políticas públicas y el desarrollo de liderazgo por medio de programas educativas comunitarias.
Misión
Para Asistencia Legal por los Derechos Humanos, los derechos que están reconocidos y otorgados para todas y todos, deben ser conocidos y reconocidos para ejercerlos y, en su caso, defenderlos; de tal forma que, esta organización concentra sus esfuerzos en brindar apoyo legal, informativo y educacional en el tema de los derechos humanos.
Visión
Ser una organización responsable de su entorno social, contribuyendo a la erradicación de la problemática social que enfrentan los sectores más vulnerables de la sociedad como lo son las personas pertenecientes a los pueblos originarios, las personas de la tercera edad, niños, jóvenes personas de la diversidad sexual, mujeres, discapacitados, etc.

Con la finalidad de cumplir cabalmente con nuestro compromiso con la sociedad, realizamos actividades vinculando nuestros conocimientos y experiencias interdisciplinarias, somos profesionistas que debido a nuestras labores de promoción, difusión, educación, cabildeo, investigación y defensa de los derechos dentro de diversas organizaciones de la sociedad civil, hemos tenido un acercamiento con la problemática social.
En Asistencia Legal por los Derechos Humanos contamos con un equipo joven multidisciplinario, desde etnólogos, abogados, internacionalistas, entre otros. Cuyos enfoques se integran en cada uno de nuestros casos.
