Using creativity, and ALP’s mission, and guiding principles the TransJustice coordinator will work collaboratively with members and ALP staff to coordinate, develop, and evaluate the current community organizing campaign led by and for Trans and Gender Non Conforming People of Color. This includes supervision of volunteers and members, campaign development, political education and leadership development programming oversight and implementation, oversight of program area(s), public speaking, representing on coalitions, monitoring program budget and reporting and representing the organization to relevant funders.
The Audre Lorde Project (ALP) is a Lesbian Gay Bisexual Two Spirit Transgender and Gender Non-Conforming (LGBTSTGNC) People of Color center for community organizing, focusing on the New York City area. Through mobilization, education and capacity-building, we work for community wellness and progressive social and economic justice. Advocacy, Movement Building & Campaign Work
- Coordinate member leadership, staff and relevant partners to develop and maintain long term grassroots community organizing campaign for TGNC POC New Yorkers. Our current campaign is for safe, sustainable and long term housing for TGNC POC.
- Lead bi-annual evaluation of campaign strategies
- Cultivate community partnerships with organizations and service providers in New York City and garner their support and involvement in the campaign work.
- Represent ALP and TransJustice on economic, racial, immigrant, and gender justice; and work locally (and nationally as needed) with coalitions
- Develop and maintain relationships with TGNC POC leadership across the city and nationally to move forward ALP’s contribution to larger movement building work.
- Develop and maintain relationships with TransJustice’s TGNC POC base.
- Develop and facilitate relevant curriculum for internal and external trainings related to the political campaigns and/or political issues that TransJustice is prioritizing
- Trouble shoot with supervisor, staff, members and relevant partners around incidences of violence within our communities, and organize rapid response with organizing partners and allies including advocating for TGNC POC on issues of violence and safety with media, police, policy makers, and local city government, etc
- In coordination with ALP 3rd Space Support Coordinator, work on ensuring that the TransJustice program is accessible and centers those most impacted by oppression and support current TJ members to access culturally competent resources & referrals.
- In coordination with ALP’s Membership Coordinator, support the leadership development of members through developing skills based organizing trainings, regular check-ins, and workshops for TGNC POC members.
- In coordination with ALP Staff, support on large scale community events to create visibility and education around the political issues and conditions TGNC POC face in New York City
Administrative and Collective ALP Staff Responsibilities
- Participate in staff meetings and collective staff responsibilities including staffing organizational events, all staff retreats, organization-wide decision making bodies, and staff wide professional development.
- Staff and coordinate logistics for program area meetings and events
- Maintain collective structure and decision-making processes for TransJustice.
- Extensive collaboration and coordinate with other ALP program areas
- Monitor and develop annualprogram budget
- Maintain all administrative documentation (including expense tracking, quarterly/monthly reporting & evaluation)
- Track and record relevant curriculum, training materials, agendas, contact and reference information
- Supervise and coordinate supervision of relevant volunteers/members including: recruitment, screening and hiring, training, development and evaluation
- Represent ALP and organizing area(s) to funders as requested by supervisor
- Write reports and updates documenting progress of organizing area(s)
- Represent the organization at meetings and events as requested by supervisor
- Other duties as assigned by supervisor
- Understanding of and commitment to ALP’s organizational mission, guiding principles and Lesbian Gay Bisexual Two Spirit Transgender and Gender Non-Conforming (LGBTSTGNC) People of Color (POC) issues.
- Proven ability working with multi-racial, multi-ethnic, multi-gendered, and intergenerational communities
- Proven ability to work with communities of varying abilities and commitment to maintaining accessibility across all program areas.
- Strong working knowledge of LGBTSTGNC POC, LGBTSTGNC and POC communities, resources and services in the NYC area
- Campaign & Organizing Experience; from designing to implementing campaign strategies
- Excellent interpersonal and communications skills and comfortable with navigating city officials, media, and community representatives.
- Strong peer-counseling, conflict-management and crisis management skills.
- Public speaking on issues, policies and strategies impacting LGBTSTGNC
- Strong facilitation skills for small to large groups
- Able to coordinate large actions/events for 300 or more people
- Experience cultivating leadership and decision-making among community members; developing and leading grassroots community organizing campaigns; and solid interest/experience in movement-building strategies.
- Supervisory experience within a community-based organization, using consensus and other participatory decision-making models.
- Experience in program development, implementation and evaluation – including the development of popular education trainings and tools
- Able to use PC-based word processing, computer literacy required
- Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends
$50,900 with generous fringe benefits
