“Without community there is no liberation”
--Audre Lorde--
Dear Community Members and Supporters,
For over 15 years the Audre Lorde Project staff, board, and members have worked toward building up a vibrant, fierce and self-determined community. We’ve struggled across our differences to create strategies for challenging the multiple oppressions our communities face daily and we are excited for all the possibilities that the next 15 years of struggle and celebration have in store!
ALP believes that as a community we have the resources to build a sustainable organization that takes action and demands change. Simply put, without the support of community, there would be no ALP, and for that we thank you.
Being part of ALP and becoming a donor will guarantee that ALP can always be a space, a community, and an organizing center that will responsibly reflect, represent and serve our various communities. You can donate online through Network for Good or use the pdf form below and mail in your support to ALP at 147 W 24th St 3rd fl, New York, NY 10011. You can also make a monthly pledge to ALP via Network for Good or through PayPal by sending your donation to email address donate
alp [dot] org. Imagine after a year, a contribution of $42 per month makes you a major donor to the Audre Lorde Project!
In the last year alone, ALP, with your support, has achieved many victories, a few being:
- Recruited over 300 new members and reached over 3000 people through a wide range of activities from events such as ALP’s annual Chillin and Grillin community barbecue to critical community forums such as ―A Moment For Movement Building: LGBTSTGNC POC Groups Welcome Queer Palestinians.
- ALP’s SOS Collective held the first Annual Bed Stuy Pride, featuring local businesses (including Safe Spaces – businesses who have committed to the SOS Safe Neighborhood Campaign), community organizations, performers, and community leaders. Over 500 people and over 30 vendors attended this event.
- ALP’s TransJustice in partnership with the Sylvia Rivera Law Project won a major victory in the Welfare Justice Campaign when the NYC Human Resources Administration approved community developed and led trainings on serving Trans and Gender Non Conforming communities.
- Launched ALP’s newest program area — 3rd Space Support. This program provides LGBTSTGNC POC facing the greatest barriers to survival with support on issues such as employment, housing, and healthcare.
- Launched 3rd Space Support’s Health and Wellness Collective a group of professional healers who strive to offer accessible, and sliding-scale holistic health care services to the Audre Lorde Project’s members, staff, and larger community.
- Trained over 100 LGBTSTGNC POC individuals to be leaders for our communities through ALP’s organizing and leadership trainings including the TransJustice Community School, ALP’s Organizer Training—Daring to Be Powerful, and ALP’s Interpreter Training for LGBTSTGNC immigrants of color.
- Engaged in national movement building through participation in building ROOTS a national coalition of Queer and Trans POC organizing groups.
As our past 15 years lead into another 15, we hope that you’ll join us in the victories and lessons awaiting us. If you haven’t already, come visit us in our new home. Become a Member. Please donate what you can $5, $10, $20, $100 or $1000; once a year or once a month and join us in building movements at the intersections.
Through struggle & solidarity,
ALP Staff and Board
